272 Hedges Pedestal

Contreras Earl Architecture was appointed by leading Australian property developer Sunland Group to design the two-storey pedestal base and communal areas for the ‘272 Hedges Avenue tower’ in Mermaid Beach, Gold Coast, Australia.

272 Hedges Avenue project is an important marker in the urban landscape marking the transition from the low rise residential precinct of Mermaid Beach to the high rise typologies of Broadbeach. The Pedestal design brings a human scale to the project which allows the tower to respond at the scale of the pedestrian and contribute to the beachside public realm. The 44 storey residential tower marks a point of transition for the coast’s urban form, marking the southern boundary of the high density zone.

The “Hedges Pedestal” is inspired by the natural forces in play at the project’s coastal location. The subtle curving semi reflective exterior façade resembles the crests and erosion effect of wind on sand while its interior creates the allusion of a rock cave naturally eroded.
